A
midsummer downpour rages for hours, making black rivers of the track at
Lexington, Ohio, and sending the skidding cars and their soaked drivers
back into the shelter of the garages. Great showers of spray
surround the splashing cars, each one an aerodynamic fountain that
echoes the specific shape of the speeding car. Other cars
assemble for the next race, their drivers belted in, waiting patiently
for the storm to pass, their mechanics huddling beside them under
welcome umbrellas.
